SynthesisSYNTHESIS – Jr. Concert Band

Open to Grade 9 Instrumental Music students, this ensemble begins rehearsals in mid-October and extends technical skills learned in the classroom. 

Instrumentation:  Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba, Upright Bass, Mallet Percussion, Percussion.

The fundamentals of tone production, ensemble playing, musical interpretation and basic musicianship are all important elements of the Junior Concert Band rehearsals.  Music selections incorporate traditional, classical, film score, and Pop music. 

This band performs at the Christmas Concert, Grade 8 Parent Night, the Kiwanis Music Festival, Talent Show, Spring Concert and the Wonderland Music Festival.  Junior Concert Band members have also traveled to International Music Festivals in New York, Boston, and Chicago in previous years. 

This band rehearses on a weekly basis on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30pm-4:00pm.  Late bus transportation is available. There is no formal audition process for this ensemble.

HIGH DEFINITION – Sr. Concert BandHigh Definition

Open to Grades 10-12 Instrumental Music students, this ensemble begins rehearsals in mid-September and extends technical skills learned in the classroom and in Junior Concert Band, maintaining our high musical performance standards at St. Stephen. 

Instrumentation:  Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba, Upright Bass, Mallet Percussion, Percussion.

The fundamentals of range, tone production, ensemble playing, principal parts & solo performance, musical interpretation, musicianship and the role of section leader are all important elements of the Senior Concert Band rehearsals.  Music selections incorporate traditional, classical, film score, symphonic, Broadway, Rock and Pop music. 

This band performs at the Remembrance Day Ceremony, Christmas Concert, Arts Night, Elementary School  Tour, Talent Show, the Kiwanis Music Festival, Mass, Spring Concert, and the Wonderland Music Festival.  Senior Concert Band members have also travelled to International Music Festivals in New York, Boston, and Chicago in previous years. 

This band rehearses on a weekly basis on Thursday afternoons from 2:30pm-4:00pm.  Late bus transportation is available.  There is no formal audition process for this ensemble.

NEW:  Sr. Jazz Combo

Open to Grades 10-12 Instrumental Music students, this ensemble begins rehearsals in mid-October and extends technical skills learned in the classroom and in Junior Concert Band, maintaining our high musical performance standards at St. Stephen. 

Instrumentation:  Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Upright Bass, Bass Guitar, Guitar, Piano, Mallet Percussion, Percussion.

The fundamentals of ensemble playing, solo performance, improvisation, musical interpretation, and musicianship are all important elements of the Senior Jazz Combo rehearsals.  Music selections incorporate Big Band, Dixieland, Blues, Latin, Ragtime, Foundational Jazz and Pop music. 

This band performs at the Christmas Concert, Arts Night, Talent Show, the Kiwanis Music Festival, Spring Concert, and the Wonderland Music Festival. 

This band rehearses on a weekly basis on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30pm-4:00pm.  Late bus transportation is available.  There is no formal audition process for this ensemble.

Music CouncilMUSIC COUNCIL

Open to any student at St. Stephen Secondary.  Previous musical experience is not necessary.

Participants earn volunteer hours toward their required 40 Community Service Hours.

Positions Include: media technicians (photography, sound, display), musical score librarians, venue managers, instrument/equipment engineers, and promotions managers.

Music Council members are strong leaders who develop, maintain, and implement new initiatives for the Music Department each year. Council works together to promote the various musical ensembles and the department as a whole throughout the school and community.  Council meets regularly to discuss and plan events and logistics related to the music program.  Beyond the Music Department needs, Music Council members find that they obtain knowledge and skills for job/career and post-secondary résumé.


Music Council members meet on a weekly basis, and communicate through the Remind App.

Application information is posted in early September and positions begin in October.
