The SHSM–Environment enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. Students joining this SHSM might be considering careers such as:
Landscape and horticulture technicians and specialists, Technical occupations in geomatics and meteorology, Biologists and related scientists, Chemical engineers, Civil engineers, Forestry professionals, Geological engineers, Geoscientists and oceanographers, Landscape architects, Meteorologists and climatologists, Natural and applied science policy researchers, consultants, and program officers, Urban and land use planners, Material handlers, Outdoor sport and recreational guides, Silviculture and forestry workers, and Water and waste treatment plant operators.

What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?
• The SHSM is a Ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). A SHSM enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their post-secondary goals. Completing a SHSM is not a requirement to graduate.
What do I need to complete The Environment SHSM?
Must be a grade 11 or 12 student (You can apply in grade 10 for your grade 11 school year).
Complete 4 major courses. Students must complete at least one major course from grade 11 and 12. See list of majors courses below.
Complete two co-op credits. See below for more co-op details.
Complete 2 english credits AND 1 math credit in grade 11 OR 12.
***Note: The following requirements are organized by the SHSM lead teacher and all certifications/electives/trips are paid for through the SHSM fund provided by the Ministry of Education.
Complete compulsory certifications in First Aid, CPR, Compass/Map Global Positioning and WHMIS.
Students must participate in Experiential Learning, Reach Ahead and Sector Partner Experiences.
Complete 3 elective certifications
