The SHSM–Justice, Community Safety, and Emergency Services enables students to build a foundation of sector-focused knowledge and skills before graduating and entering apprenticeship training, college, university, or an entry-level position in the workplace. Students joining this SHSM might be considering careers such as:
Police officers, court reporters, medical transcriptionists, employment insurance, immigration, border services, revenue officers, firefighters, commissioned officers of the Canadian Armed Forces, lawyers and all medical related fields.
What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?
• The SHSM is a Ministry approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). A SHSM enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their post-secondary goals. Completing a SHSM is not a requirement to graduate.
What do I need to complete The JCSES SHSM?
Must be a grade 11 or 12 student (You can apply in grade 10 for your grade 11 school year).
Complete 4 major courses by the end of grade 12. See list of majors courses below. See list of majors courses below.
Complete two co-op credits. See below for more co-op details.
Complete 1 english credit AND 1 math credit in grade 11 OR 12.
***Note: The following requirements are organized by the SHSM lead teacher and all certifications/electives/trips are paid for through the SHSM fund provided by the Ministry of Education.
Complete compulsory certifications in First Aid, CPR, Conflict Resolution and WHMIS.
Students must participate in Experiential Learning, Reach Ahead and Sector Partner Experiences.
Complete 3 elective certifications
In a nutshell: Courses + Certifications/Training/Electives + Co-op = SHSM Badge on your Diploma

In school Co-op

In school co-op is run through our Co-op department at St. Stephen. Students are placed in a two credit co-op. This will take up two periods on their timetable. Students could have a morning or afternoon placement. Our co-op teachers try to connect students to their areas of interest and work with many employers in the Bowmanville area. Students may find their own co-op placement, but this must be approved by our co-op department. Students completing co-op in Bowmanville may be bused to their co-op from school and back to school depending on the employer's location. Co-op placements outside of Bowmanville will require students to find their own transportation.
*Note: Students can complete a 4 credit co-op which would run for the entire semester.
Night School Co-op
Students choosing this option sign up for a night school co-op on their own and use their job as the co-op placement. This co-op placement is not offered through our school, but when completed will be recognized and added to the students transcript. Night school co-op is offered in Semester 1 and 2.
Student have the option of signing up for:
1 credit co-op = 90 hours of working plus co-op assignments
2 credit co-op = 180 hours of working plus co-op assignments
(2 co-op credits are required to complete any SHSM)
*Note: Students are continued to be paid as they normally would through their employer. The employer must agree to the co-op placement.
Students will register for night school co-op through myBlueprint. Look to the continuing education section for night school options. Registration for night school co-op opens in September for semester 1 and February for semester 2.
Summer School Co-op
Students choosing this option sign up for summer school co-op on their own and use their job as the co-op placement. This co-op placement is not offered through our school, but when completed will be recognized and added to the students transcript.
Student have the option of signing up for:
1 credit co-op = 110 hours of working plus co-op assignments
2 credit co-op = 220 hours of working plus co-op assignments
(2 co-op credits are required to complete any SHSM)
*Note: Students are continued to be paid as they normally would through their employer. The employer must agree to the co-op placement.
Students will register for summer school co-op through myBlueprint. Look to the continuing education section for summer school options.
Summer school registration usually opens in April.
